Sedation Instructions

Pre-Sedation Instructions

The following instructions may be helpful when preparing for your upcoming surgery. Please do not hesitate to call if you have any last minute questions. We can be reached at Rocky Mount Periodontics and Implant Center Phone Number 252-446-0400 during regular business hours.

You should receive your pre/post-operative prescriptions with this instruction sheet. For your convenience, please have them filled prior to your scheduled surgery, unless they have been previously phoned in to the pharmacy of your choice. Please bring your filled prescriptions with you to your appointment.

1.Do not eat any food or drink any liquid
—–as of midnight before my morning appointment
—–as of 8 a.m. on the day of my afternoon surgery; a light snack as discussed with office is acceptable no later than 4 hours before the surgery time

2.Any medications that are normally taken should be taken with a sip of water, unless otherwise instructed by the doctor.

3.Do not eat or drink any caffeine beverages for 4 hours before the procedure.

4.Do not drink any alcoholic beverage or take certain medications for 12 hours before and 24 hours after the procedure.

5.Arrange for a responsible adult to drive you to the appointment and home from the appointment and stay with you until the effects of the sedation have worn off. The responsible adult should consult with the office staff to coordinate when and where to pick up the patient.

6.Loose clothes should be worn to facilitate the starting of an intravenous line to administer the sedation or anesthetic and also to facilitate the placement of monitoring equipment. Flat comfortable shoes should also be worn.

7.Do not drive a motor vehicle or operate dangerous machinery on the day that you receive IV conscious sedation.

8.Contacts should not be worn on the day of the surgery.

9.No make up or jewelry should be worn on the day of the planned surgical procedure.

10.Please do not use any skin lotion the day of the surgery.

If applicable:

11.Bring nasal inhaler or nitroglycerine tablets with you to your appointment.

12.Do not take Monamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOI) for 14 days prior to the day that I receive IV conscious sedation.
